The Ultimate Weekend Itinerary for Dorset, England

After spending the past few weeks in London, I have been grateful for the time to explore new parts of the South of England not so far from home.

This ultimate weekend itinerary for exploring the Dorset coast is my love letter to this awe-inspiring pre-historic coastline, and the joy I experienced exploring these places.

From coastal escapes like Weymouth and Studland to the breath-taking beauty of the Jurassic Coast and Durdle Door, there are incredible places to be found along the Dorset coast.  Paired with scenic hikes, sandy beaches, rolling hills and dramatic cliffs, the sheer variety of wow-factor moments along this shoreline is incredible.

This itinerary is based on a tried and tested excursion I took recently, which allowed plenty of time to explore the highlights over the course of a weekend.

Good to know before

  • For a trip like this, a car is definitely needed to explore
  • Weather in Dorset can be fairly unpredictable so pack a hooded waterproof coat and lots of layers especially in winter and autumn
  • Some of the hikes below involve steep climbs, and in wetter conditions can get quite slippery so wear proper hiking shoes
  • It takes around 2 ½ hours to drive to Durdle Door from London
  • Durdle Door is a beautiful arched rock formation over the sea and part of a UNESCO world heritage site – formed somewhere around 140 million years ago! It is the most famous part of the Jurassic Coast

Where to Stay in Dorset

Depending on your budget and preferences, there are plenty of options to choose from. I’ve narrowed down my top accommodation picks in the list below:

No 98. Boutique Hotel – We stayed in this friendly and cosy hotel in the nearby town of Weymouth. Head here for rooms with sea views and interiors inspired by the shoreside. It served as a good base for exploring the Dorset coastline.

Lulworth Lodge – We had initially set our sights on staying here had it not been fully booked. The location is really convenient for exploring both Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, especially if you are keen to experience sunrise at the latter.

The Pig On The Beach – At this country house hotel homely charm is combined with luxury and countryside views. Situated along Studland Bay it’s a half hour walk away from Old Harry’s Rocks.

Weekend Itinerary

Day 1, AM: Arrive at Durdledoor and hike to Lulworth Cove

If you manage an early start from London, you can have a good few hours to explore spectacular Durdledoor and Lulworth Cove in the morning.  I’d suggest parking at Durdle Door carpark, heading down to the beach to explore Durdle Door and then hiking back along the cliffs to the equally beautiful Lulworth Cove. On the way you’ll also pass the stunning azure waters of Man of War Bay. After about 40 minutes hiking from Durdle Door you’ll reach the picturesque village of West Lulworth, where you can grab a great fish and chips for lunch from Finley’s Café.

Day 1, PM: Lulworth Cove and Portland Bill

After lunch, it’s time to explore the secluded white pebble beach at Lulworth Cove, climb up either sides of the horseshoe cliffs and take in the views. A short distance west of Lulworth Cove you’ll find the Stair Hole, a tiny limestone cove and unique rock formation. Once you’ve hiked back to your car, I’d recommend driving to the Grade II listed Portland Bill lighthouse and finding its lesser known neighbour, Pulpit Rock. Located on the Southern tip of the Isle of Portland, there is no better place to feel the sheer power of nature as you are fully exposed to spray of the mighty waves and elements. That evening, if you’re staying in Weymouth head to the Ship Inn for a menu of British pub classics, or Enzo’s Ristorante & Pizzeria for authentic Italian staples.

Day 2, AM: Weymouth and Corfe Castle

Today you can pack plenty in too. Depending on where you’ve based yourself, this could be a good time to go for a walk along the golden sands of Weymouth beach and explore the vibrant Old Harbour. Next, jump in your car and make the 40 minute drive to the romantic ruins of Corfe Castle, set against lush rolling hills. For the best views of the Castle, hike up the steep hill to the West of the ruins – it’s well worth it.

Day 2, PM: Old Harry’s Rocks Walk

A final short drive will take you to the coastal village of Studland. Park up at South Beach Car Park and from here you can take the gentle walk to Old Harry. Found at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, the white chalk of Old Harry’s rocks gleam in the sun in a dazzling contrast to the vivid blue ocean beneath. Once you have marvelled at these 65 million-year-old chalk towers, end your afternoon in the Bankes Arms pub for a traditional Sunday roast, or for fine dining, head to The Pig on the Beach – before making the drive back to London.
